BayCol®

Do not discontinue the use of any drug without first consulting your physician.

BayCol® is the name brand for cerivastatin. In the “statin” class, BayCol® was approved to decrease lower-density lipoproteins, or LDL, the so-called bad cholesterol. It does this by promoting the production of high-density lipoproteins (HDL), which is known as “good” cholesterol because it lowers the risk of artery clogs and heart disease.

While other drugs in the same class have side effects, BayCol® presented an extremely high incidence of rhabdomyolosis. This condition damages skeletal muscle, releasing myoglobin into the bloodstream, where it accumulates in the kidney and leads to renal failure. Patients who are elderly, took high doses of BayCol®, or used it in combination with genfibrozil had significantly higher risk of developing rhabdomyolosis. Symptoms of rhabdomyolosis include the following:

  • Pain
  • Muscle weakness and tenderness
  • Muscle contractions
  • Fever
  • Tachycardia (rapid heartbeat)
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dark urine
